Splitter plate and higher modes
With the splitter plate located behind the cylinder it is possible to
control vortex formation and the oscillation is dominated by the shear layer instability. Stability analysis finds in addition to Karman mode several amplified higher frequency ones.
Similar solutions are obtained for the cylinder without splitter plate and Re=1000. In this case the eigenanalysis is based on the steady flow solution.
The analysis of this type can be the first step into investigation of turbulent flows and their control with the stability method presented here.
Conclusions
With control means shown here it is possible to increase the critical Reynolds number several times. Global stability gives precise evaluation of the effect of control following the results of experiments and finding new ones. The analysis of the disturbance development and propagation in wake region helps understanding of the instability phenomena.
The method is being extended to investigate eigenmodes related with turbulent flow.
